The Benefits of Online Yoga

Abhijata IyengarThere’s no denying that 2020 has been a tough year! While many things remain uncertain; one of the silver linings has been our ability to stay connected and continue our yoga practice via online classes.

Some of us have even been able to attend classes and workshops with teachers in other states and countries, including Abhijata Iyengar, the grand-daughter of BKS Iyengar – directly from her home in India!

Nothing beats a studio class with a real teacher, but there are many benefits of doing yoga online!

  • Connection – feelings of loneliness and isolation can be eased by logging into a live class with your teacher and fellow students!
  • Convenience - you can attend classes at any time, without having to drive or finding parking.
  • Choice - you’re no longer restricted to studios that are close to your home or work, you can now attend classes with teachers from anywhere in your city, country or even the world.
  • Comfort - in your personal space and home, you can relax and enjoy the practice without worrying about anyone else around you.
  • Complete Privacy - you can choose to turn your video off so that no one can see you!
  • Care for your Health -  stay in your PJ’s and give yourself rest breaks if you’re feeling sick, tired or simply having a bad day.
  • Create a Home Practice – if you’ve struggled to find the motivation for a home practice, online yoga is a great tool to help build a regular routine.

There are some limitations and downfalls of online yoga too - including distractions from kids, partners and pets, issues with your technology, sound or internet and of course, personalised adjustments and tips from your teacher is not possible…
